The World Cup

As an American, it's amazing to see the energy and excitement towards the World Cup. When living in the U.S. it was something that I had never experienced.

Not only students, but other teachers as well, have come up to me and asked if I saw last night's game. Although to be honest, I haven't watched any of the games so far.

What I find truly interesting about the sports and the World Cup is the affect of culture.

This picture shows the most popular sport by country. The countries in green like soccer the most. Until I saw this picture, I didn't fully realize just how popular soccer is around the world. 

As you can see, the most popular sport in the U.S. is American Football. Another surprise for me was the fact that in some countries, sports like Archery, Horse Racing, Wrestling, and Kick Boxing are the most popular sports. 

It just amazes me just how different the world is. The influence of culture on our likes and dislikes is just incredible.   (Mike)
