Today is a very special day. Do you know what day today is?
.
.
That's right! Today is Groundhogs Day. (In the United States, it's still February 2nd there.)
February 2nd is Groundhogs Day. The day that the worlds discovers (kind of) whether or not there will be 6 more weeks of winter or if winter will end sooner.
That's amazing, you say. How can people know whether or not winter will end soon?
Well, let me tell you, it all depends on if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not. Who's Punxsutawney Phil, you ask? Oh, well he's a groundhog.
As odd as it sounds, this tradition started around 150 years ago. In short, when Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, comes out of his hole in the ground, if he sees his shadow and goes back in, people think it'll be a longer winter that year. But, if he doesn't go back into his hole in the ground, people think it will be shorter winter.
You can read all about it from this article by the Washington Post.
To be honest, most people do not put their trust in Phil. But, it's still a lot of fun waiting to hear what he "says" each year on this day.
Oh, I almost forgot! Happy Setsubun Day! I can't wait to go home, put on my "Oni" mask and chase my kids around the house! (Mike)
